Installing a dashcam in the Dacia Logan

Dashcams are small video recorders which stick to the windscreen or replace the rear-view mirror. They record video and sound on a continuous loop and save the results to a micro SD card. They are powered by a 12 volt 'cigar-lighter' plug, and can be easily fitted in about an hour.

Many UK insurers now give a 10% discount if one is fitted. Dashcams cost around £50.00

I tried two, the first, a Nextbase from Halfords which failed after two months, and currently a Rexing V1. The Rexing is superior; it looks neater, it comes with two sticky-pad fixings, and it gives better video.

There are a couple of ways of powering them, the first is to run the power lead down to the cigar lighter plug, the second is to put a power socket behind the fuse box cover, using a fuse tap.

Start with plugging the dashcam into a power source and setting up the time and date and recording settings. Then let the dashcam battery charge up for a while to retain the settings.

Installing the wiring. About 30 minutes.

1) Easy Wiring

The slim power cable has to installed behind the head-lining. This is a very easy task if you use a plastic tool such as a bicycle tyre lever, or better still, a plastic windscreen ice scraper.

Find the place you're going to stick the dash cam and add a couple of inches. You can lose the excess later.

Next, pull back the door seal and gently pull the beige A-pillar cover out from the top and side nearest the door. You don't need to remove it, just make a gap where you can feed the wire, aided by your ice scraper.

Hide the power cable behind the A pillar and down behind the door seal. This is much easier than it sounds

If you are powering the dash cam from the cigar lighter, the cable can be hidden behind the glove box with zip ties. The Logan power socket turns on and off with the ignition.

Working back from the dashcam, tuck the power cable behind the head-lining with your ice scraper, or fingernails. It does go in there easily, and there is no need to tug at the headlining. You can use the ice scraper blade to tuck the power lead back into the headlining. The A-pillar cover should snap back into place to cover the wire.

2) Fixing the dashcam

The dashcam lens needs to clear the shaded black area at the top of the screen, so take your time placing it by checking from outside.

Clean the screen with alcohol or glass cleaner, and attach the fixing pad. You only get one shot at this so take your time. Attach the lead, and check the dashcam lens angle. Then tidy up the excess lead behind the head lining.

3) Fuse box power socket method. ** Advanced users only **

There is room behind the fuse box cover to install a second cigar lighter power socket, connected by a 10 amp fuse tap. This requires a multi-meter, a soldering iron or crimp connectors, and good knowledge of car electrics. The dashcam cable feed up into the fusebox, from below.

* Don't cut off the dashcam plug, as it contains the 12 vdc to 5 vdc convertor. The dashcam runs on 5 vdc.

** Car electrics can be dangerous. If you short out the fuse box or cable, your car could burn to the ground, with you in it. **

Fuse taps are 'piggy-back' connectors; which replace one fuse with a secondary fused flying lead. This is connected to the new power socket, then the original fuse is placed in the fuse tap, and a second added for the new socket.

** Important: Fuse taps are directional, and need to be placed so that the blade furthest away from the flying lead is the one with the battery power on it. This ensures that the power flows through the primary fuse. Both fuses need to be the same rating.

Testing with a multi-meter will make this clear. The flying lead from the fuse tap is connected to the new power socket with a soldered joint, or crimp connectors, and the negative lead on the socket to earth (negative) There's a metal support bracket next to the fuse box on my Logan which provides this.

Next, using the meter find a (red) 10 amp fuse for a switched accessory and identify the + supply side of the fuse socket.

** Important: The 'hot end' of the fuse tap, away from the flying lead, goes in there. Double check with your meter.**

This will start and stop the dashcam when you turn on the ignition. Don't forget to insulate any exposed connectors on the new power socket and makes sure nothing can fall onto any connectors in the fuse box.

There is room to hide the new socket inside the fusebox compartment.

I used a twin cigar lighter extension socket, which gives me a second socket for the GPS. I soldered the connections, after adding heat shrink insulation.
