I have kept the factory speakers for now (as I'm usually tuned into Wave 105 Hampshire or Absolute 80s, the speakers are not exactly being pushed). All done myself. You need to have some idea on what you are doing and have some confidence in pulling bits of trim off to fit the head unit & to hide cables away. Once all these bits are purchased and then you pay for someone to fit it, I can see where a £900 figure came from.
My headunit does not have satnav, I still have a TomTom unit which sits on a beaniebag on the dash when I need navigation, hence I didn't open my wallet any further! What it does have is a HDMI input and screen mirroring for a mobile phone. I've yet to try it, but in theory I could plug in my Android phone running a TomTom App and have the output shown on the head unit screen.
It depends on what you want from a head unit. For me, I wanted the ability to connect a reversing camera and the composite video out from the dash cam recorder. The DAB radio, DVD playback etc are just an added bonus really.
