Just thought I'd report back after my first towing experience in the Stepway:

Firstly we had the towbar supplied and fit locally by a Witter specialist, we went with the Witter option as it allowed us to have a detachable flange instead of the usual swan neck. We required this as I wanted to install my bike rack and tow using a bar type stabiliser on my vintage caravan. Without it ruining the looks of my sparkling new car. Total cost £455 fitted at 3 days notice in Haslingden.

Our caravan was fully loaded at approx 850-900 kg - we had 5 passengers in the car with pets in the boot, and three kids bikes on the bike rack oh and we filled the tank to the brim........ worrying how it would compare to our old 2.0 TDCI Mondeo!!!

The Stepway proved to have good pulling torque setting off and eased over the speed bumps on our street with ease (the Mondeo used to struggle with the humps almost bottoming out!) we then joined the motorway quickly reaching 50mph at the top of the sliproad (on a big hill) we set the cruise to 55 mph and the rest was history... 5th gear all the way almost. We arrived in Trearddur with a whopping MPG of 42 - having only cost us a midge over £20 to tow our way there from Darwen in Lancashire.

She held herself amazingly with side winds and lorries passing, but we'd cruised averaging 60 mph!

This was a much nicer journey than my old tow car of the year 'Mondeo'!

Holy Cr4p Facepainter, i didn't think the Stepway was capable of towing over 550Kg, i'm hugely impressed, you do like to get your moneys worth out of the car, you just need to squeeze a horse in there somewhere ;-)

I was panicking at how she would cope - and was astounded, didn't think anything could beat my mondeo but the ride height made the massive difference!

I had been wondering how my Stepway diesel might cope with towing. Great post...thanks!

The caravan is well below the towing limit of the car, its also 22 years old. I towed the caravan back from Middlesbrough to Manchester when I bought it. Have since had the brakes, wheel drums, brake pads replaced, and new tyres (the spare was 22 years old!), and an under-carriage service.

The nose weight on the Duster 4x2 is only 50kg, not a lot. I was carrying an awning and some other essentials, I placed them on the floor of the caravan, mostly over the wheels but slightly towards the back to keep the nose weight down. Someone advised me to carry the water and waste containers in the bathroom/toilet, which is at the back.

When I got onto the motorway at about 55mph it started snaking a bit, quite worryingly, so I stopped at the first services and moved the water containers to the front and put the awning more centrally over the wheels. It was fine after that.

On the return journey I put the awning in the car and it was a lot smoother towing.

Biggest problem is other cars cutting in in-front and then braking, because they are idiots.
