Checked ESP/ASR tell-tale on digi' display today: I turned off ESP/ASR and orange 'skidding-car' symbol lit up (bottom right). Ok, that's what the manual says should happen. Why, then, is there a non-illuminating icon (on my car at least) that has the same skidding-car icon with the added word "Off", bottom-left of the display?

(Look closely, in good light, and you will see the outline of the skidding-car icon with the word "Off" on the bottom-left of the digi' display.)

There seems to be a logic break-down here: I guess someone designed the display with an ESC/ASR symbol and an ESC/ASR Off symbol. Then along comes someone else who decides which symbols light up or not: in their infinite wisdom, latter person decided 2 symbols was over-kill (I'd agree with that) so they chose the ESC/ASR symbol in preference to the much more meaningful 'ESC/ASR Off" symbol to show that ESC/ASR is (actually) off. Are you following me peop's?

Dacia: if you are listening, I'd rather you used the 'ESC/ASR Off' symbol to tell me ESC/ASR is turned off!!

I've actually seen that on the Sandero, a car with skiddy tyres and the word "OFF", my guess in the Sandero is that they used a stock dashboard light set-up and never actually gave us the ability to turn it off in the first place...? maybe?
Yep noticed that myself, the other day the warning lights came on and stayed on for a mile or two, i stopped the car and restarted and cleared, hope it was just a blip as the traction was good and i was only doing 30mph........ in reverse lol

Why would anyone want to turn off this safety feature?
Because quite simply it can be a pain in the A*** if you get stuck anywhere much better if you can manage the traction with your feet than with any electronic system in these situations

Sorry, but are you saying that your Sanderos flash up the bottom-left "ESC/ASR Off" symbol when it is turned off (as opposed to the bottom-right "ESC/ASR" symbol on my Duster)?

No you can't turn it off in the Sandero but there is a light on the dash you can see that is the skid symbol and off
Ok and ta. One digital panel for all vehicles by the sounds of it. Economy of scale OK with me, but I'm still completely puzzled why they have a warning symbol for 'ESC/ASR' and for 'ESC/ASR Off' and then don't use the latter. I guess French and/or Romanian logic is not the same as Cornish logic. (I'll wait see whether continental friends bite and then apologize - if they can explain!!!!)

It will probably light up one day when the plasma injectors fail.
Yeah, but what if both light up? If the right-hand Skidding-car symbol means ESC/ASR is turned off, will a simultaneous left-hand Skidding-car Off light mean that ESC/ASR off is off (in other words - on)? My head aches - beginning to wish I'd bought a Renault instead.

Maybe whoever designed the indicators intended the skiddy car symbol to indicate that the ESP/ASR system had detected slippery conditions and was operating, and the other one, with the OFF, was intended to indicate that the system was turned off.

Then later only one was used.

Apparently most people have no idea what most of the lights mean, not helped by different manufacturers using different symbols for the same thing.

Not so' all manufacturers that want to sell in the E.U must conform to a common standard' you will find that every warning light in your car will be the same as every other car in Europe

In the trucks I've driven when It's slippery road conditions the skid symbol ( ASR ) comes on to let you know that the truck is struggling for traction. Hope this helps Sent from my HTC Desire S using DaciaForum.co.uk mobile app
I imagine that could be a most useful tell-tale and you've got me thinking paul. I wonder:

If the r/hand ESC/ASR light warns us that ESC/ASR has been manually disengaged, has the "ESC/ASR Off" been added to warn us of a mal-function? In other words, to warn us that ESC/ASR has been turned off by the ECU or whatever (because it's not working properly) when we would otherwise think it is active. I'm thinking I might seek clarification from Dacia.
