Hello Jim, I know I'm off topic but I have the same issue with the headlight beam too low. Could you please give me more info about this... I dont want to mess up this topic so maybe on a message or a new topic?!

Thanks a milion, Razvan
Hi Razvan, sorry for not answering earlier, i would agree with Roger, about any of the methods, but i just took it back to the dealer and he did it there and then in 10 minutes. The reason i fitted stronger bulbs is because i didn't think the lights were strong enough. Jim.

I've just got the car back from the garage, and the explanation for the Knocking was , "Quote" "Found NSF Driveshaft sticking in flange, greased up splines on both driveshafts and re-fitted. Road tested to find all now OK.".

So far i have found it all right to drive, but time will tell, and i'll keep you posted. Still haven't heard from WGB as to how he got on and what was found on his car. Jim.

Simple things first ! Have you checked the internal beam adjuster, down by your right shin ?

Mine was set to fully low when I picked my car up !

a)Failing that, when they are set to high adjust with an allen key on the white plastic adjuster, just near where the adjuster cable fits onto each headlight.

b)Take it back to the dealer ! ;)
you need a 6mm allen (hex) key

Many thanks for reporting this, I would agree that drive shafts not sliding on splines would/could/might cause the noise you describe - so a note for ALL Dacia owners (all 4x2 have the same technology) is to make sure the splines are greased when doing any servicing - I have to say I will cheat and will be using motorcycle chain oil from an aerosol can.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions, Jim, Roger and Mary! I'll give it a try in the weekend and let you know what happen.

P.S. The dealer would be the last solution :)

Well, here we are again, this time with a reason and a solution to the knock.

After putting my car into a garage for over a year, from new, trying to find this knock, i got onto Renault customer Care, they suggested a fresh look at the problem at a different garage. By a lot of good investigation, and help from Renault techie guys, the reason for the knock was found to be the Bulkhead flexing, the solution was to stick on noise damping to the engine side of the bulkhead, problem solved knock gone.

I subsequently had a call from renault, during which i asked if this was a safe fix or a quick fix, answer was, safe.

This is the first time i have come across this problem, and i know that bodies are meant to flex, so much, but i just can't help thinking this is a bit weird, any opinions on this.

Regards, Jim.

Bodies can flex a hell of a lot, sometimes to a shocking degree - we used to have a Ford Fusion and if you placed your fingers between the top of the door and the car frame you could feel how much it flexed on fast roads and tight corners.

Hi Jamesy i have the same problem with knocking in front suspensions. I have allready read your last post but i dont understand what is "Bulkhead flexing". If someone can describe me what is this part or post image of this part I would be very grateful.

The 'bulkhead' is the 'fire wall' part of the car's body from the windscreen to the floor that separates the interior from the engine compartment ! ;)

I got my Stepway in January this year and at about 6 months old I started to hear this slight metallic knocking coming from the front off-side. I had to have driven approx. 8 miles before the knock could be heard. It only ever happens at slow speed, for instance, if I was rolling up to a set of lights to stop, so maybe around 5ish MPH. I took it to the Dacia dealer who investigated and informed me it was a lose bonnet catch. No it wasn't the knock was still there. Took it back again and actually took the chief spannerman for a run, he heard it quite easily, verdict..."it's the top bearing on the suspension leg", we will replace both sides for you. Dealer rang me when the job was done, I asked has your spannerman taken it out for a test drive, answer, yes it has been tested and the knock has gone. Great, says I, I'll be down to collect it. Driving home, no knock, I thought fantastic, however when I was nearly home and driven about 8 miles the knock was back again. Has anyone else who has had this kind of knock at slow speed had it sorted yet and what was the verdict as to what was causing it. It is deffo not "body flexing" please??

I've got it. Really bad after a 70 mile run on the motorway

I've noticed that when the dampers are cold it doesn't do it. Once they've heated up you hear the occasional knock knock noise. Recently I did 70 motorway miles on a very hot day and it was knocking so badly I thought something was about to fall off. When I got to my destination I checked the strut assembly and wheel bolts and everything was as tight as a crabs. Four hours later, when everything had cooled down, the knock had gone. On the return journey I used a different slower route avoiding the motorway and I hardly heard the knock.
Therefore, I suspect it's dodgy dampers. Only my front near side does it.

You mention dampers so I am assuming some jarring or road undulations. If so, the dealership ordered what the chief scribe said were "rattle clips". Turns out he ordered brake caliper clips to keep them from jumping about making a metallic knocking racket. Noise is gone now.

More fuel to my argument about it being duff dampers - it was cold today (about 12 deg) drove 30 miles and never heard a single knock.

Dampers do seem to be a weak point. Many here have replaced theirs. Some failed early and the dealership replaced them, but with OEM shocks...which seems pointless to me. Under-speced dampers are just going to fail again.

Trouble is there are no uprated dampers on the market yet. Many trusted manufacturers offer OEM spec however it is a possibly expensive route to find they do the same thing.

Mine are nearly 3 years old, no knocking !! ;)
