Do you have a Rusty Duster?

My Duster was an ex demo registered in Jan 13 with a 62 plate. I have not seen any rust yet but now have a creaky steering wheel (see other posts), some grommets missing in sub frame and lights appear low - hopefully to be rectified at service this month.

Took my Duster to local dealer today and showed them rusty bits - under door seals and on wings inside engine bay. Photos taken and now waiting to see what happens next. I was the first to raise rusty issues with this dealer.

I have further investigated the rust on my car following notifying the dealer of rust under upper door seals and on wings inside the engine plus rust in the upper door seal itself. Dealer responded positively and approval given for rectification and now awaiting date for work to be done. I mentioned that there was more that I hadn't notified them about and I have to inform them of areas when I take it in. Thus the reason for further investigation. I have now removed all rubber seals and found rust under the rear seal in the engine bay and a variety of small spots including spot welds under the internal door surround seals on all four doors. The biggest problem is that when the door surround seals are removed there is an oblong area (about 2 inches long) at the bottom of each door frame to the sill where it appears that there is only primer. Three of these areas are rusty. The paint is an off white colour but the car is grey metallic. Has anyone else found this? I presume something during painting has held this area which has meant that no undercoat or top coat has been able to be sprayed on (must watch the manufacturing video again to see if anything fits my interpretation). Additional problems include rust around one of the child locks and the metal in all the rubber seals is rusty at the cut ends just like the upper door sealing strips which are to be replaced..

Took car to dealer this morning. More photos taken and now awaiting Dacia's ok. Bodyshop manager said of previously approved work that Dacia must be aware of problems as they approved without question.
Interesting responses to my previous post in that lack of paint on some areas has been notified to Dacia before. I would suggest that everyone checks under all their rubber seals for rust and get it dealt with as soon as possible.

Tony, thanks for the info on the rear trim attached to the lights and seams. Checked all and everything fine so far. I'll keep watch and check again before warranty up next Jan.

Took my Duster in to dealer today for treatment of all rust and replacement of rusty rubber seals. Will post results when I get car back. Mentioned that rust now being found in the jack cubby hole but I am still the first they have dealt with.

Just returned from France. Plenty of Dusters and those I looked at appeared to have more paint - when looking at the gutter under the windscreen. Obviously couldn't look under rubber seals but no visible signs of rust.

Been inspecting the car to see if any more rust. Found unpainted areas with some rust where the hinges are attached to the hatchback. It appears that hatch is painted with hinges fitted and these have been moved when fitting to car. Additional rust found around grommet in hatchback through which the washer hose runs. Must contact dealer again.

As a result of previous comments I thought Id try and post photos. However, I don't know how to do it. Can someone explain? I can't seem to copy and paste the photos from computer or ipod nor use their file name in the image tab.

Noted the photo previously posted of rusty VIN and mine is also going rusty as well.

Thanks for the really helpful list.

Geraint, what are Dacia likely to release concerning rust?

Here are a few more areas to add to list:
Around tailgate hinges if moved when fitted; no paint under hinges.
Around grommet on tailgate where washer hose enters tailgate.
Under door seals, rectangular section on bottom sill with no top coat and potentially rusty.

I have taken my car to the dealer to look at the tailgate where no paint and rust near the hinges. Awaiting approval for fix. Was told that I am still the only one with rust that they have dealt with.

A positive statement but it will be interesting to see how far Dacia will go to remedy the problem. I am waiting for contact from my dealer to remedy the last notified lack of paint and rust on the tailgate. I wonder whether they will wait pending any contact to me from Dacia? Will the paint warranty be extended for those with a problem particularly as it is generally not a paint issue but a pre paint bodywork problem? I may contact Dacia customer service to find out.

Today I talked to a Customer Support Manager (CSM) at Dacia Customer Services. I referred to the web statement and explained that my car had already had rust treated and was awaiting contact from my dealer to deal with rust on the tailgate. I stated that I was concerned about the problem and that there may be areas of rust I could not see plus that I had heard that where repairs had been undertaken on other vehicles, rust was returning.

The CSM explained that they had been briefed yesterday and that France were working out a fix so that I don't experience problems again. Things will be finalised in the next few weeks where specific body shops throughout the UK will be inspecting/undertaking extensive checks on vehicles to locate corrosion, not just on the visible rust but elsewhere. The work will be done effectively and correctively preventing having to come back in as a final fix.
Alternative transport would be provided. Body shops would be fully prepared and trained to undertake the work.

The problem had been identified to specific cars/batches and would be put right. I said mine was an early one, thinking it would be earlier cars (VIN is 67) but I got the impression that it is not just early manufactured vehicles and could be individual cars.

Dacia will be in touch with me over the coming weeks. I believe that the current job for rust will await whatever inspection will be undertaken. I should also inform, whoever deals with the car, about the work that has already been done so that this is also checked. This is even though it will also be on Dacia's records.

I now await contact from Dacia. If everything transpires as stated then I hope all visible and hidden rust will be dealt with.
